If you recall my debacle on IG stories a few weeks ago, I was completely torn between some patterns and paint colors for our Family Room (see my FAM ROOM story highlight for some background).
Here was the poll:
After sharing my thoughts, I received hundreds of messages with varying opinions. The messages were partially “go with the pink/green because you seem to love it more” and partially “no bitch, go blue”
I know that 110% of you believe that I’ll end up painting our family room green. Or that I’ll paint it blue and then paint it green.
Which may be the case
BUT the Holy Spirit came through, because I suddenly remembered that I was OBSESSED with this shade of blue that Erin Gates used in her home and honestly, I am truly head over heels for this color – Benjamin Moore Wales Gray. It may not be the right color for our room, because paint colors look different from room to room (and home to home), but I’d like to try and find something close.
I admittedly struggle in the beginning stages of designing a room, because I know what will be popular/will be the most shared, and I sometimes find myself gravitating towards that vs. what I truly want. I call it the DeNimes affect, because our DeNimes bedroom was my most popular/most shared makeover of all time – except I didn’t end up liking the color.
But I’ve since learned to go with my gut and choose what I love, which is not necessarily the popular vote.
And when it comes to painting the Family Room blue instead of green, I believe that I can paint this room a shade of blue that I love as much as a shade of green.
This is not me trying to force myself to step outside of my comfort zone. Our house is literally my comfort zone, so if I’m doing things that don’t feel right just for the sake of doing something different, I’ll regret it.
I really really do love this shade of blue.
Here’s the updated 3D render. Once I tweaked it to reflect a light blue-gray, I proclaimed a verbal “hell yes”
I also loveeee this shade of blue with Malmaison Fontaine. I wanted to use it for cafe curtains in our kitchen reno but since we’re not doing a kitchen….
What do you think? Blue Chinese Peony or Malmaison Fontaine?
I’ll reserve my pink and green dreams for another upcoming project… our dining room.

I love it! I think the Malmaison Fontaine fives it a more relaxed playful vibe, fitting for a family room/den, but both are stunning.
Yes, I love BM Wales Gray!! It’s so versatile and looks different in every light (a good thing, imo). I hope you love it too!
I had the same reaction to this soft blue gray! It seems right, at least in the rendering. I love both fabric choices (Chinese peony gold is one of my favorite patterns) but I prefer the Malmaison Fontaine here because it’s moodier. Also, thank you for being vulnerable with the process. I’m embarrassed how much time I spend waffling on home decorating decisions!
Now that’s a beautiful blue! I’d opt for Malmaison over the Peony for the punch it gives to the room, nudging it toward family room instead of bedroom vibe.

Wow, this blue family room is absolutely stunning! The color scheme creates such a calming and inviting atmosphere. I love how the shades of blue are complemented by the white accents. It’s the perfect space for both relaxation and family gatherings.
