Finding a unicorn item is like looking for an honest man in congress, but finding a unicorn vintage rug sometimes feels nearly impossible. It has to be the right size, price, style, tone, pile height, have just the right amount of patina, etc. I’m ashamed to admit just how much time I actually spent looking over for the *perfect* unicorn nursery rug over the last few weeks.
I realized not too long ago just how important a rug is when considering a design; it quite literally grounds a room and should be one of the very first things to consider during the planning phase. I usually have an idea of what I like just based on my style – but it takes a lotttttt of time (scrolling) to find a rug that makes me feel a certain way. And when I do find that unicorn, I’m more comfortable with spending $ because I know it can truly make or break a room (also, buy once cry once).
I was looking for something that gave me the same feeling that our bedroom rug gave me when I found it on Etsy, and although I found a few that I really liked (I’ll share the many runner-ups below), none of them had me feeling like they were the one, you know?!
So after many hours and weeks of searching, here’s the rug I finally found and knew immediately it was the one:
The thing is – I’m not crazy about how it pairs with the lead pattern, Althea.
I mean it could work but, since the rug is so fabulous, I’m now considering it as the lead pattern, and reconsidering other patterns.
I’m torn on whether the ottoman + pillow fabric should be the same pattern (and the rocker would be a different pattern), or, the ottoman is one pattern, the pillow is another, but I keep the chair solid.
A few examples of how I’m imagining some of these patterns:
I’ve always had a thing for this Radish Moon pattern – it’s just so cute
I feel like this is another opportunity to emphasize the importance of patience and persistence when secondhand shopping – it always pays off!
BTW, here’s the shop I ordered from
As promised, here are all the rugs I’ve saved over the last few weeks. Enjoy!

Oooh that rug IS perfect. So happy you found it. Also, I think you’ve almost revealed how much time you spent on your search by the looks of the amount of other rugs you saved! Ha! But still seems worth it all!

That rug is incredible! I actually love how the radish and bunny fabrics look next to each other. Kinda go together thematically too lol.

These rugs are lovely, but so many of them have been bleached. Do you know anything about the bleaching process that rug merchants use and what it means for the longevity of the rugs? (I don’t know myself, but I would like to.)
