I used to think that choosing a gray paint color was hard. Then I realized white paint colors were nearly impossible. But as I’ve painted each room in our home (some rooms more than once…twice…even three times…) and swatched hundreds of paint colors over the years, I realized that every color is complicated, mostly due to undertones. But today we’re not talking about all colors, we’re talking about one paint color which (IMO) happens to act as a neutral – Farrow and Ball French Gray, which is a gorgeous greenish-gray.
I’ve personally only ever used this color in one room that happens to be southern facing, but if someone gave me an ultimatum that I could only choose one color to paint our entire house with, it would be this color.
According to Encycolorpedia, it’s technically a medium shade of yellow with an LRV of around 45, and it’s the perfect example of how light can change a paint color throughout the day.
Here are some photos of our main bathroom, which is painted French Gray (the crown and base are Vert De Terre, another lovely shade of green)
In South-facing rooms like our bathroom, French Gray appears as a muted warm green. Depending on the time of day it can lean more warm than cool since southern light is warmer.
It would be a lovely kitchen cabinet color if you want to paint your cabinets a color but don’t want to go too bold.
Here are some other photos that prove French Gray is truly one of the most beautiful paint colors:

I even used some leftover French Gray to paint this DIY Bobbin Frame.
What do you think of French Gray? Do you have a favorite paint “color” that you feel is a neutral?
Have a great weekend!

I never thought a green-gray paint color could be so versatile until I read this blog post! The author brilliantly explains how this unique shade manages to balance warmth and coolness, making it a true neutral that suits various design styles.

I would love to know if you completely DIY’d the green and gold shelf in the bathroom or if the hardware came as a kit and you painted the shelf green?
